The starting point
What this idea sets out to solve.
Create a room that can handle weekday meals and a few people gathering at the same time. The island brings preparation and seating together, while the surrounding cabinetry keeps everyday items close at hand.
Give the island a job
One side is a working surface; the other provides seating. Before settling on its size, map the routes to appliances, doors and surrounding cabinets.
Mix closed storage with open shelving
Full-height and base cabinets do the practical work. A limited amount of oak shelving adds an accessible place for a few regularly used items without replacing essential storage.
Use several layers of light
Pendant lighting helps define the island, while task and general lighting need their own consideration. The lighting plan should follow the way the kitchen is used.
